On this page I'll give you some news and resources about Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 release.
What Happened to Windows 9?
Microsoft skipped it. There are a lot of theories on why but my guess is that they wanted to make a clean break from the bad image of Windows 8 and distance this OS by jumping straight to Windows 10.

Well...it's free for most people, for the first year, yes. Basically if you're running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro you'll be able to upgrade to the comparable version of Windows 10 for free during the first year. After that year is over if you already have Windows 10 installed...you're good. If not, and you want to upgrade to it at that point...you'll have to buy it.
But I have Windows XP...isn't it free for me too?
Nope. If you have Windows XP, or Vista, you'll have to buy Windows 10 if you want to upgrade. Unless you upgrade to an eligible version of Windows 7 or 8 first.
